Core Positions

Enormous amounts of time need to be given to the core positions of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. My teacher, Leo Negao emphasizes the importance of not losing position and I believe that if you get the core positions absolutely nailed, your opponent stands little chance, and being mounted is inevitable. The most accomplished always look comfortable and in complete control when arriving in the core positions of Jiu-Jitsu. The well-known, high level fighters who overwhelm their opponents with unstoppable mastery of the core positions are in my mind: Roger Gracie, Fabio Gurgel and Xande Ribeiro.

Core positions which we will practice over and over again with increasing levels of resistance include:

  • Sitting with good posture in someone’s Guard
  • Side Control or as is sometimes referenced, Across Side
  • North South
  • Knee on Stomach – also referred to as ‘Knee on Belly’
  • The king of the dominant positions, Mount.

All of these have lovely little details that I believe are extremely interesting to study, learn and put into practice. Nothing impresses me more on the mat than beautiful Jiu-Jitsu technique.
