All of the BJJ techniques taught at BJJ Lifestyle Team are passed down from Leo Negao – former BJJ world champion who received his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt 17 years ago. Leo started practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1990.
Regarded as an exceptional grappler – Leo has trained extensively with many of the greats of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu including Leo and Ricardo Vieira, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Fabio Gurgel and Terere – also Anderson Silva of MMA fame.
Leo grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He began training at the original Carlson Gracie academy in Rio and later spent considerable time at the Alliance academy in Sao Paulo.
Leo practices Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for self-defence. His style is based around the application of pressure, not giving his opponent space to recover position. He is also a master of escapes and defence. His guard passing and top game are designed for reality.
Head BJJ coach at BJJ Lifestyle Team – Diccon Lynes – trains with Leo three times a week and brings what he learns back to the team in Kingston. Diccon decided to start training with Leo at Diesel Gym in East London in April 2009 to learn No-Gi BJJ and to also focus on BJJ for self-defence.
