Introduction for BJJ beginners in Kingston and Surbiton
Our BJJ lessons for beginners in Kingston are all about having a nice training evening in a relaxed environment with a focus on learning and not fighting. Worried about your physical fitness or think the training (sparring) we do at the end of our lesson is going to be too much for you – don’t worry. Most arrive a bit out of shape and are wanting to learn Gracie Jiu Jitsu self defence – if that is also you, Kingston BJJ offers exactly what you are looking for.
BJJ Specific Warm Up Suitable For Beginners
Our warm up is very light and designed to raise body temperature, it doesn’t last long, isn’t competitive, isn’t a conditioning session and involves some Jiu Jitsu movements that we will teach you. If you can walk a mile, you can get through our warm up.

Warm ups are also designed to be easy. We have a defined curriculum in place that ensures BJJ beginners make steady progress in all key areas. Vitally, this includes lots of standing techniques – defences against surprise attacks and clinching.
Gracie Jiu Jitsu Lesson Content
Our focus is Gracie Jiu Jitsu self defence. We spend time equally between techniques performed from a standing position and techniques on the ground. We all train together, believing that mixed ability lessons are the best way for beginners to progress quickly with BJJ.
Lessons are led by Head Instructor Diccon Lynes who is a Black Belt First Degree, recognised by Rickson Gracie’s Jiu Jitsu Global Federation https://jjgf.com/academy-member/diccon-lynes.
Diccon learns Gracie Jiu Jitsu directly from Black Belt 4th Degree, Eddie Kone.
Location
We have a huge mat just a few minutes from Kingston train station. We also teach at the Royal British Legion in Long Ditton, near Surbiton. You can see our timetable and postcodes for our venues here: https://kingstonbjj.com/timetable/
