At Kingston BJJ, we practice a lot of standing Jiu Jitsu self defence. Therefore, being a very strongly focused BJJ self defence club, every lesson features standing BJJ self defence and fundamental groundwork. As a result of our frequency of practicing standing BJJ self defence techniques and groundwork, our responses stay sharp. Above all, we stick to fundamental techniques.
BE TAUGHT BY A JIU JITSU GLOBAL FEDERATION RECOGNISED BLACK BELT
Our head instructor, Diccon Lynes, has had the privilege of learning Gracie Jiu Jitsu self defence from Eddie Kone. Eddie is a Black Belt Fourth Degree under Rickson Gracie’s Global Jiu Jitsu Federation. Diccon is a Black Belt First Degree under Rickson’s JJGF – https://jjgf.com/academy-member/diccon-lynes.

LEARN TO DEFEND YOURSELF AGAINST SURPRISE ATTACKS
Most importantly, our lessons feature a constant learning and refinement of BJJ self defence against surprise attacks. These attacks include sucker punch defence and clinching. In addition, over and under the arms bear hug defence, standing guillotine defence and many other forms of attack. Such is the importance of having technical answers to these attacks, that we spend about a third of our time every lesson, working on our standing responses. Our Jiu Jitsu training is self defence orientated rather than sport Jiu Jitsu focussed.
Our Jiu Jitsu clinching is detailed, we discuss threat awareness, defensive hand positioning, the absolute importance of strong base, structure, and weight distribution.
This attention to detail means our clinches stand the best chance of success, under pressure. Next comes the contact phase, again, strong posture to avoid being headlocked and a detailed structure to control an agressor.
