We Believe Wearing a Gi Improves Our BJJ

Part 2 of ‘why we wear a Gi at Kingston BJJ’ – we believe wearing a Gi improves our Jiu Jitsu. We see the Gi as a training tool. Wearing the Gi when training (sparring), further teaches us to protect our neck. Having a lapel or collar, gives our opponent the opportunity to use their hands to apply a choke. Having a stiff collar to grab, which could be any item of clothing, allows our opponent to hold on and attempt to break our posture. The benefit of wearing a Gi is that we need to defend against grips, break them off if necessary and have good posture at all times.

One of the biggest reasons we feel wearing a Gi improves our Jiu Jitsu. When our Gi is in contact with our training partner’s Gi, of course friction is created. This requires us to work harder to escape when underneath someone and our escapes need to be very exact and on point. The obvious benefit is that our technical escapes are heavily tested. When we are just wearing a rashguard, the tight top we wear underneath our Gi, it can sometimes be easier to escape if we are sweaty and there is no friction.

We like tradition. Our head instructor, comes from the Helio Gracie, Royler Gracie lineage, both of which only wear a white Gi. Head instructor Diccon Lynes is recognised as a Black Belt First Degree by Rickson Gracie’s Jiu Jitsu Global Federation – https://jjgf.com/academy-member/diccon-lynes

Wearing the Gi helps us develop our Jiu Jitsu.
